Dresden

Dresden is the capital of Saxony in Eastern Germany. It is one of the most important cities of Germany. It has an 800 year long history with many ups and downs. Because of its rich baroque architecture which was a copy of the Florence's style the old town is called "Elbflorenz" which means the Florence on the Elbe.

Before World War 2 the old town of Dresden was one of the most beautiful cities in the world and maybe this was one of the reasons why it was destroyed. After World War 2 Dresden was one of the most important industry sites in the GDR. The focus was on a more one a successful economy than on a beautiful city. That’s why the ruins of the destroyed Dresden rested as they were in the inner city. Only the Semper Opera House was rebuilt. After the wall came down in 1989 the reconstruction of the old Dresden began. The Castle and the buildings around took the most time to be rebuilt.

In 1994 the city of Dresden decided to rebuild the destroyed “Frauenkirche”. To the times of the GDR the ruin served as memorial against war and fascism. The reconstruction started by collection original stones of the Frauenkirche which were reused in the building.

In 2005, after 11 years the reconstruction was finished. The memorial against war has turned into a symbol of reconciliation. The cross on the church’s tower was made by the son of a British pilot who has bombed Dresden.

After finishing the Frauenkirche the historical “Neumarkt” has been rebuilt. Today the historical old town of Dresden is almost completely rebuilt.
