Textile Implants

Biomedical textiles designed for use in specific biological environments typically use synthetic fibres similar to those used in surgical sutures. Extensive research has been carried out at the IPF for over 15 years in the field of textile implants produced by embroidery techniques.

Research topics

Embroidered scaffolds for Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) Tissue Engineering

Functional zones of the ACL: 1... bone, 2... cartilage, 3... ligament
  • Development of an artificial cruciate ligament substitute using embroidery technology
  • Use of slowly resorbable thread materials based on polylactic acid
  • Embroidery pattern design based on natural functional zones with different porosities and mechanical properties
  • Optimisation of the embroidery pattern to preserve the stress-strain behaviour of native lapine cruciate ligaments

Individual and anisotropic mesh implants

  • Freedom to influence the mechanical properties of meshes due to the embroidery pattern (homogeneous, heterogeneous and graded distribution of mesh pores possible)
  • Reinforcement structures can be applied locally to meshes in addition to the basic embroidery pattern
  • Python-based script for quick embroidery design
Influence of the basic stitch on the elasticity
Anisotropic meshes made with basic and reinforcing patterns
