Basic concepts of soft matter
Deepening our understanding of polymers, colloids, and interfaces and search for new properties, states of matter, and systems
Polymers have a fascinating potential as materials for future technologies due to the tremendous variability of their structures. Uunderstanding of basic principles and interactions in polymer systems is an indispensable precondition to exploit this potential. Chemical and physical methods as well as theoretical models need to be advanced and applied, and theory and simulation have to be closely linked to synthesis, processing, and analytics of polymers and colloids to reach this goal.
This knowledge-based approach complements and deepens the application-oriented research of the other strategic topics and delivers overarching concepts.
It will also open up a new way for mimicking adaption and regulation processes in living matter as well as for realizing metamaterials which will be the basis for completely new functional materials.
