The institute gets its basic financing from public funds with a share of 50 percent each from the state and federal government. In 2024, a regular budget of EUR 28.7 million was provided. In addition, the institute aquires third party funds through projects and industrial contracts. Third party funding amounted to EUR 11.4 million in 2024.

This institute is co-financed by tax funds on the basis of the budget approved by the Saxon State Parliament.

By December 31, 2024, the IPF had a total of 443 employees.

At any time, a large number of visiting scientists works at the institute for different periods. In 2024, their number amounted to 139.
