Colloquium: Dr. Julia Schumann: A Customizable Data Management Solution for Materials Research: An Introduction to NOMAD

In the era of big data and open science, effective research data management (RDM) is essential for advancing scientific discovery and fostering collaboration. In this seminar I will explore RDM within the context of materials research, emphasizing the role of structured data and open repositories in enhancing data sharing, reuse and reproducibility. I will introduce NOMAD as a versatile platform for managing materials research data, functioning both as a centralized repository and a customizable, local electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) and data management solution. Currently being developed by the NFDI consortium FAIRmat, NOMAD offers extensive capabilities for data management. I will demonstrate the platform's customization possibilities through the development of plugins, which includes definition of custom schemas for data entry, functions to extract data from files, as well as search interfaces. These customization options significantly enhance the platform's utility and adaptability, making it a valuable tool for a wide range of research applications.
