DAAD - Program for project-related personal exchange Australia 2022: "Engineering a multicellular pancreatic cancer model"

The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) will support the academic and personal exchange between Carsten Werner's team (Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden e.V., Institute Biofunctional Polymer Materials, Dresden, Germany) and Daniela Loessner's team (Department of Chemical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University, Melbourne, Australia) in the project “Engineering a multicellular pancreatic cancer model.”

Pancreatic cancer is one of the deadliest cancers and less than 10% of patients survive 5 years after diagnosis. There is a critical need for technologies that model this disease in the laboratory to better understand its tumour biology and to test better targeted or personalized treatments.

This collaborative project aims to engineer a multicellular model of pancreatic cancer using biomimetic hydrogels to study the biology of this disease and to find improved treatments. The complementary expertise of the Werner and Loessner groups in bioengineering and cancer research is critical to develop an innovative 3D model for pancreatic cancer, which closely mimics the structural and cellular properties of tumour tissues.
