New project "Electroactive microenvironment based strategies for Cardiac Tissue Regeneration" funded by DAAD
The DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst) has decided to grant the collaborative project "Electroactive microenvironment based strategies for Cardiac Tissue Regeneration" (PIs Prof. Senentxu Lanceros-Méndez, Portugal and Carsten Werner, Germany) over the next two years.
Cardiovascular diseases are the primary cause of death worldwide, having no cure for myocardial infarction as the heart has a limited regeneration capacity.
The project will aim at the development of a reliable and adaptable platform with electroactive supports and a versatile bioreactor to deliver physical stimuli, allowing a better understanding on the cardiac tissue response and also to develop effective approaches for cardiac tissue regeneration. This platform will support the culture of cardiac cells and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in a realistic environment that allows the study of the interactions between different stimuli and cells.
