The new paper Customizing biohybrid cryogels to serve as ready-to-use delivery systems of signaling proteins
by Jana Sievers, Ralf Zimmermann, Jens Friedrichs, Dagmar Pette, Yanuar D. P. Limasale, Carsten Werner and Petra B. Welzel introduces a modular ready-to-use multi-armed polyethylene glycol (starPEG)-heparin cryogel system for the customized and highly sustained delivery of signaling proteins. Varying the heparin concentration of the material enabled fine-tuning of the protein release without affecting other cell-instructive properties. By combining experimental investigations and mathematical modeling we could show that the macroporous structure causes local differences in the concentration of proteins released into the pores and in the environment of the cryogels. Controllable loading and release, mechanical stability, and easy storage of the already biofunctionalized protein-loaded scaffolds for on-demand use make the user-friendly system attractive for translation into the clinic as a therapeutic protein delivery vehicle. The study was published in Biomaterials.
